Marlene McKay
KiHS High School Teacher

Hello everyone, my name is Marlene McKay. I live in of Sioux Lookout. I commute to Frenchman's Head everyday. Frenchman's Head is one the KiHS communities opened this year. It is part of Lac Seul First Nation. I have been teaching Native Language through KiHS. Keewaytinook Internet High School is affiliated with Keewaytinook Okimakanak.

Teaching Native Language on line is challenging but fun. I am happy to say that students were successful in learning how to write in various written systems such as syllabics and roman orthography. They were able to listen to their teacher on how to pronounce and translate phrases and words through audio files.

My past experiences include teaching eight years of teaching Native language, and being a guidance counsellor for two years. I have worked with students who speak 3 very different languages which are Cree, Ojibway, and Oji-Cree. It is wonderful to heard so many different dialects of Oji-Cree coming from different students.

Technology is becoming a reality in First Nation communities and we need people such as yourselves to be trained in that area. I would also encourage your young people to finish their Education through Computer technology. A potential student could complete grade 9 at home. An adult could complete their college or university degree through computer mediated courses. One of the benefits of computer technology is that you can get up in the morning get on line, complete your lessons and still get a diploma. You can also communicate with other people from different communities and all around the world.
