The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) oversees the delivery of a wide variety of essential services and programs in Nunavik. Nunavik is Quebec 's Arctic region. A vast territory lying North of the 55 th parallel, it is bordered by Hudson Bay to the west, Hudson Strait to the North and Ungava Bay and Labrador to the east. It is 507,000 km 2 of wild tundra, and home to approximately 10,000 Inuit.
There are fourteen communities in Nunavik. Population ranges from less than 200 in the smaller communities of Tasiujaq and Aupaluk, to more than 1,500 in the larger communities of Kuujjuaq, Inukjuak and Puvirnituq. The communities are very isolated as there are no roads or train links between them. Maritime shipping lanes are open only a few months every year. All travel and most shipping within Nunavik has to be done by air.
The KRG, whose head office is located in Kuujjuaq, is comprised of 11 separate departments. The KRG manages regional affairs through more than 40 agreements. These departments provide or oversee personnel, programs and services that affect many aspects of daily life in Nunavik.
The KRG has a budget of more than $112 million a year. A little more than half of the KRG's budget comes from the Quebec government. Around a quarter comes from the federal government and the balance derives from local sources.
The KRG employs approximately 350 people.
