Deer Lake First Nation

Chief Evelyn Meekis is the elected leader of Deer Lake, which is located about 175 km north of Red Lake. Its population is 962, with 755 on-reserve members, and Oji-Cree is the community language.

Personal homepages and use of the community portal are the most popular uses of ICTs in Deer Lake. "Communication is the biggest impact from ICTs," said Darrell Ostamas, multi-media producer. "Using computers is the main way that people communicate with friends in and outside of the community."

People also use the community portal to see what is happening in the community, Ostamas said. They are always requesting that more information be posted.

Deer Lake is connected to a T1 service from the Bell Canada digital microwave radio network. They operate their local cable system to connect all their offices and homes to broadband services.
