Fort Severn First Nation

Chief Roy Gray is the elected leader of the Fort Severn First Nation, which is located on the Severn River near Hudson Bay. Its population is 578 with 449 on-reserve members and Cree is the community language.

E-mails are the most popular use of ICTs in Fort Severn. "The biggest impact from ICTs is the ability to do business in a matter of seconds," said Madeleine Stoney, E-Centre manager.

ICTs are used very widely in the community, Stoney noted. All the band employees have access
to a central server which allows them to transfer information very efficiently.

Fort Severn is using their C-Band satellite earth station and Industry Canada’s Public Benefit bandwidth to distribute broadband services in their community through the community cable network.
